You are cordially invited to
“Aloha UPR Fun Talk: the US., Burma and Thailand experiences”
Organized by
the Institute of Human Rights and Peace Studies, Mahidol University and Amnesty International Thailand
3 April 2012, at 6.00 – 8.00 pm.
The Reading Room, 4th floor, 2 Silom Soi 19
Background
The Universal Periodic Review (UPR) is a UN human rights mechanism, designed to ensure equal treatment for every country when their human rights situations are assessed. It is a process which involves a review of the human rights records of all 192 UN Member States once every four year. This, thus, provides the opportunity for each State to declare what actions they have taken to improve the human rights situations in their countries and to fulfil their human rights obligations.
Having been created through the resolution 60/251 of the UN General Assembly, all human rights records of every country had undergone the first round of the review in 2011. However, since the UPR itself is an ongoing process and is somewhat rather new, exchange of experiences and ideas of how to make such a mechanism truly meaningful is vital.
Therefore, in this occasion, the Institute of Human Rights and Peace Studies, Mahidol University and Amnesty International Thailand would like to cordially invite interested individuals to our special event, “Aloha UPR Fun Talk”, with Dr. Joshua Cooper from the Center of Human Rights, University of Hawaii and a focal point for the UPR from the American civil society as a key speaker. The forum will be also shared by Mr Akanit Horatanakun, from the People’s Empowerment Foundation and Ms. Cheery Zahua, a Burmese activist in exile who will share their UPR experiences on Thailand and Burma respectively.
