The Reading Room เสนอโปรแกรม "Seeing the Invisible: หนังก็อตซิลล่าเวอร์ชั่นแรกกับประเด็นสารกัมมันตภาพรังสี" ร่วมพูดคุยกับ Claude Estèbe ช่างภาพชาวฝรั่งเศส ผู้สนใจศึกษาเรื่องก็อตซิลล่าในแง่มุมต่างๆมานาน โดยเฉพาะในประเด็นเกี่ยวกับสารกัมมันตภาพรังสี ผ่านภาพและคลิปวีดิโอจากภาพยนตร์เรื่องก็อตซิลล่า ในปี 1954 และจากแหล่งข้อมูลอื่นๆ ในวันอังคารที่ 4 กันยายน เวลา 19:30น. เป็นต้นไป

เรื่องราวของก็อตซิลล่าจากภาพยนตร์นั้นมีอยู่ว่า ก็อตซิลล่าเป็นอสูรกายร่างใหญ่มหึมา ที่มีต้นกำเนิดสมัยก่อนน้ำท่วมโลก (antediluvian) และถูกทำร้ายโดยการแผ่สารกัมมันตภาพรังสี ระหว่างทำการทดลองระเบิดไฮโดรเจนของสหรัฐอเมริกา ที่เกาะบิกินี ทำให้ก็อตซิลล่าออกอาละวาดทั่วกรุงโตเกียว ก่อให้เกิดความรู้สึกคล้ายกับเป็นวันสิ้นโลก (Apocalypse) โดยสารกัมมันตภาพรังสี

อิชิโร ฮอนดะ (Ishirō Honda) ผู้กำกับภาพยนตร์เรื่องก็อตซิลล่าเวอร์ชั่นแรกในปี 1954 ตั้งใจออกแบบอสูรการนี้ให้เป็นการแสดงออกทางรูปธรรมของภยันตรายที่มองไม่ เห็นของการแผ่สารกัมมันตภาพรังสี โดย ฮอนดะ ได้กล่าวในบทสัมภาษณ์ว่า เขาสร้าง โกจิระ (Gojira - ชื่อดั้งเดิมของก็อตซิลล่า) เพื่อเป็นการ "ทำให้สารกัมมันตภาพรังสีเป็นรูปธรรมขึ้นมา"

Seeing the Invisible: Representation of the Radioactivity in the First Godzilla Movie

The Reading Room presents "Seeing the Invisible: Representation of the Radioactivity in the First Godzilla Movie" talk by Claude Estèbe, a French photographer and researcher on the topic of Godzilla, especially its relation to Radioactivity. He will also show images and video clips from the first Godzilla movies from 1954 and from other sources in his presentation at The Reading Room on Tuesday, September 4th, from 7:30pm.

In the movie, Godzilla is an antediluvian monster that was hurt by the radiations generated during the testing of U.S. hydrogen bombs at Bikini island, rampages through Tokyo in a radioactive Apocalypse. Ishirō Honda, the director of the first Godzilla movie (1954) (original title Gojira) carefully designed the monster to embodies the deadly invisible danger of radiations. Honda said in an interview that he conceived Gojira as a way of "making radiation visible".
