Bangkok, 27 April 2013
The Bangkok-based Southeast Asian Press Alliance (SEAPA) in cooperation with Thai Media Policy Center, Faculty of Communication Arts, Chulalongkorn University invites members of media community, diplomatic corps and civil society organisations based in Bangkok to attend the launch of SEAPA’s annual report on the state of media freedom in Southeast Asia on Thursday, 2 May 2013 at Mongkutsamatiwong Building, a conference room on the 10th Floor, Faculty of Communication Arts, Chulalongkorn University (http://web.stagram.com/
The report will highlight issues, cases and concerns about the situation of media freedom in 11 Southeast Asian countries in 2012. It will also include analysis of trends for the year as well as forecasts for the following year in order to draw public attention to what could be potentially challenges to overall freedom of expression. For 2013, SEAPA is timing the launch of the 2012 report to coincide with the global celebration of UNESCO-sponsored World Press Freedom Day on 3 May whose theme this year is “Safe to Speak: Securing Freedom of Expression in All Media”. The launch of the SEAPA report is part of the regional network’s advocacy efforts to raise the awareness of the media community and the public about trends and challenges in the regional media landscape and violations that have taken place throughout the year. It is hoped the media community specifically, and the general public, are more sensitized to threats faced by the media community at large and lend support to initiatives to arrest the violations. During the launch, SEAPA will also highlight some of the specific cases that need urgent attention of the media community as well as the state authorities concerned.
