เนื่องในโอกาสวันยุติโทษประหารชีวิตสากล (ตรงกับวันที่ 10 ตุลาคมของทุกปี) จะมีการจัดกิจกรรมรณรงค์ยุติโทษปรหารชีวิตอย่างกว้างขวางในหลายประเทศ เครือข่ายยุติโทษประหารชีวิต ซึ่งเกิดจากการรวมตัวของกลุ่มองค์กรที่สนับสนุนการยุติโทษประหารในประเทศไทย ประกอบด้วย สถาบันสิทธิมนุษยชนและสันติศึกษา มหาวิทยาลัยมหิดล ศูนย์ศึกษาสันติภาพและความขัดแย้ง จุฬาลงกรณ์มหาวิทยาลัย มูลนิธิสันติภาพและวัฒนธรรม สมาคมสิทธิเสรีภาพของประชาชน สมาคมแอมเนสตี้อินเตอร์เนชั่นแนลประเทศไทย มูลนิธิผสานวัฒนธรรม จึงเห็นควรที่จะจัดงานเสวนายุติโทษประหารชีวิตขึ้น เพื่อแลกเปลี่ยนความรู้ และสร้างความตระหนักรู้ในสังคมไทยในเรื่องโทษประหารชีวิต โดยได้รับการสนับสนุนจากสถานทูตฝรั่งเศส

To campaign for the abolition of Death Penalty (DP) in Thailand is an extremely difficult task because of the prevalent belief in the society that a guilty person needs to go through his karma: if one commits a violent act he or she deserves a violent consequence. However, it is necessary to open a space for discussion on this issue and in a continuing manner. We need to discuss, for instance, about the effectiveness of DP as a deterrent to serious crimes and also the moral aspect of such a punishment.
On the occasion of the International Day on the Abolition of Death Penalty, that falls on the 10th of October each year when this issue is debated worldwide, the working group of the Network for the Abolition of Death Penalty in Thailand, deems it appropriate to organize a Public Discussion. We have invited two resource persons from abroad. These two experts will have the opportunity to discuss with Thai academics, human rights activists, scholars, and other concerned persons in order to create a greater awareness on the Abolition of DP in Thailand. This event is supported by the French Embassy.
